Translated by John Fryer (傅蘭雅). Published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in China (益智書會).

Containing eight plates with forty detailed illustrations of optical instruments and phenomena, the work explains the fundamental optical principles—reflection, refraction, the behavior of lenses and mirrors, color dispersion, and the theoretical basis of telescopes and microscopes in Chinese.

Prepared under the direction of John Fryer as part of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in China’s program to popularize scientific knowledge, Guan Xue Tu Shuo represents a late-Qing attempt to convey Western physical science to Chinese audiences by means of lucid exposition and visual illustration.
