Uncut. With a large folding plan of Kou-Sou (Suzhou) and an exceptional silk plate on natural silk, depicting Hedde’s visit to silk workshops in Suzhou. The spine bears the Chinese transliteration of the author’s name, “意四多咽”. 

The volume is divided into three parts under the general title Catalogue de l’Exposition faite par la Chambre de Commerce de Saint-Étienne:

1. Ordre des contrées successivement parcourues par M. Hedde

2. 萬絲華物解 Exposition des produits de l’industrie sérigène en Chine (the Chinese silk industry);

3. 萬華貨物解 Exposition des produits divers de la Chine (a broader survey of Chinese products).

A detailed catalogue of more than one thousand objects and samples collected in China between 1843 and 1846. Isidore Hedde, a ribbon manufacturer from Saint-Étienne and Delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, was appointed by the Chamber of Commerce of Saint-Étienne to represent the French silk industry. He formed part of the commercial mission dispatched to China under Louis-Philippe to re-establish and strengthen Franco-Chinese trade relations.

An important primary source for the study of nineteenth-century Sino-French commercial exchanges and the silk industry.
