In June 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion, the Boxers and Qing troops besieged the British Legation in Beijing and the Xishiku Church. In response, the Eight-Nation Alliance launched a military campaign from Tianjin to Beijing to rescue the besieged foreigners and Chinese Christians. As the foreign forces advanced, Empress Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guangxu fled to Xi’an. In August 1900, the Allied forces captured Beijing.
Shortly after the fall of Beijing, the Emperor of Japan dispatched his aide-de-camp, Colonel Okazawa Suzu, along with photographer Yamamoto Makoto, to China to inspect and offer condolences to the Japanese troops. During his time in Dagu, Tianjin, and Beijing, Yamamoto Makoto took numerous photographs, selecting 108 images to compile into "Views of the North China Affair " (北清事変写真帖), which featured bilingual captions in Japanese and English. The album was published in Tokyo in 1901.
