Ling Yan Li Shao is the first systematic Chinese translation and exposition of Western doctrines of the soul. Completed in 1623, it was a collaborative work by the Ming scholar-scientist Xu Guangqi and the Italian Jesuit Francesco Brancati. Based on Aristotle’s De Anima and enriched with elements of Platonic philosophy and Catholic theology, the book introduced concepts such as the “threefold soul” and the “four causes” to a Chinese readership. Xu employed Confucian classical terminology and Neo-Confucian concepts to articulate these ideas, pioneering a new mode of Sino-Western philosophical dialogue. As a landmark achievement of the late-Ming Eastward Spread of Western Learning.

The work was reprinted in 1919 (Year 8 of the Republic) by the eminent Republican-era historian Chen Yuan(陈垣).
