This rare directory was issued in 1949 by the National Association of Chinese Shipowners (中華民國輪船商業同業公會全國聯合會), the central organization representing shipping and maritime commerce in the late Republican period. At the time, the federation’s president was Du Yuesheng (杜月笙), one of the most influential figures in the Chinese shipping and business community during the 1940s.
The volume provides an invaluable record of the structure and membership of China’s steamship industry at the close of the Republican era. It includes detailed listings of directors, supervisory members, various standing and special committees, and member associations and companies, along with their addresses, branch offices, and vessels. Additional sections cover foreign steamship companies operating in Shanghai, national and international shipping routes, ship registries and statistics, and comparative tables of vessel tonnage and ownership.
The final section consists of an 80-page blank diary section for 1949, intended for members’ use. In this copy, two blank diary leaves have been torn out, but the main text remains complete and well preserved.
