An important archive relating to Max Goebel (古貝爾), Belgian Consul-General in Shanghai during the late Qing period, documenting diplomatic, financial, and industrial negotiations in China at the end of the nineteenth century.

The collection includes a very rare Qing imperial decoration diploma conferring the Order of the Double Dragon, Second Class, Third Grade (red ground with silver dragons inlaid with coral), issued in Guangxu 18 (1892).

Of particular significance is an autograph working notebook by Goebel. It comprises approximately 56 pages recording his travels and activities prior to his departure for China (1873–1878), followed by approximately 220 pages documenting his work and negotiations in China (1887–1890), relating to mining concessions, military supply discussions, and broader financial initiatives. The diary contains capital calculations, share distribution models, records of meetings with Qing officials—including references to Li Hongzhang—and discussions concerning Hong Kong, European capital participation, and industrial development. An unpublished primary source of exceptional importance for the study of finance, resource development, and military modernization in late Qing China.

The archive further comprises Chinese official documents, correspondence with Qing officials and commercial contacts, photographs, and related family papers. Also present is a sketch and watercolor album by Ernesto Goebel (entitled Croquis Ernesto Goebel Schangai),comprising 16 interior and domestic views—possibly depicting the family’s Shanghai residence—together with studies of Chinese figures (7 pencil sketches and 1 coloured portrait), 7 watercolor landscapes (one likely representing Shanghai), and an additional harbour sketch.
