This rare second edition of An English and Cantonese Pocket-Dictionary by Scottish missionary and sinologist John Chalmers is one of the earliest Western works to use the term “Cantonese” in place of the previously common “Canton dialect,” a shift that was gradually adopted by other authors and linguists in the following years.

The dictionary provides a solid foundation for English-speaking learners of Cantonese, offering essential vocabulary along with Chinese characters and a phonetic system derived from Samuel Wells Williams' Romanization, further adapted with English-style spellings to aid pronunciation.

John Chalmers served with the London Missionary Society during the late Qing Dynasty and contributed significantly to Chinese linguistic studies. In addition to this dictionary, he is also known for producing the first English translation of Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching (1866), titled The Tau Teh King.

This second edition includes expanded content compared to the 1859 first edition, making it an invaluable resource for collectors, linguists, and historians of 19th-century sinology and missionary scholarship in China.
