Xu Dingyi (Ju Xuezi) was a native of Hunan, who went to Japan in 1902 to study abroad at the age of fifteen. He died of illness in Japan in 1908. The present work was compiled by the author shortly before his death and was edited and published posthumously by his father and close associates. Xu was also the author of Zuguo Nüjie Weiren Zhuan 祖國女界偉人傳(Biographies of Eminent Women of Our Nation). Together, these works are regarded as important contributions to late Qing discourse on women’s education and the women’s movement.
