Étienne Albrand (Chinese name Ren Sidefan 任斯德范, previously Bai Sidewang 白斯德望) was a French missionary of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP). He arrived in Guizhou in 1846, shortly after the region had been elevated to an Apostolic Vicariate. On 24 February 1849, he was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Guizhou, serving as its leading ecclesiastical authority during a formative and often turbulent period.

Following a major “教案” (missionary incident) in 1849, Albrand adopted the surname Ren 任, and his full Chinese name thereafter became Ren Sidefan 任斯德范. He continued his missionary and administrative work in Guiyang, where he remained until his death on 22 April 1853.

The present work was most likely published during his missionary tenure in Guiyang, reflecting the early efforts of the Catholic Church to establish doctrinal and pastoral literature in southwestern China during the mid-nineteenth century.
