This rare late-Qing translation records the celebrated Krupp artillery trials held at Meppen, Germany, from August 5 to 8, 1878, where the German arms manufacturer Friedrich Krupp AG demonstrated its latest long-range steel guns before military and diplomatic representatives from across Europe. Among the attendees was Li Fengbao (1839–1903), the Chinese Minister to Germany, known by his literary name Danya 丹崖, whose presence was noted in the text; he later reported on the event to the Qing court. This book provides a vivid picture of China’s early efforts to monitor Western military technology during the Self-Strengthening Movement (洋務運動).
