A Japanese translation and adaptation of An Analytical Compendium of the Various Branches of Medical Science by John Neil and Francis Gurney Smith. Translated by Matsumura Noriaki and edited by Takagi Genshin, this Meiji-period publication is one of the most comprehensive Japanese introductions to modern Western anatomy.

The text, issued in seven volumes, covers Osteology, Ligaments, Myology, Digestive Organs, Respiratory and Circulatory Systems, Nervous System, and Sensory Organs. The accompanying atlas volume (解剖摘要圖) contains 111 finely executed copperplate engravings, illustrating skeletal, muscular, vascular, and nervous structures, as well as the principal organs and sensory systems.

Bridging the late Rangaku (Dutch Learning) tradition and the emerging Western medical education of the early Meiji era, Kaibō Tekiyō played a key role in introducing modern anatomical science to Japan and became a standard reference for medical students and practitioners in the late nineteenth century.

Text volumes in very good condition. Atlas with some soiling and rubbing to covers, and minor worming with small losses.
