Hua Qi Xu Zhi is an introductory manual on technical drawing instruments compiled by John Fryer (傅蘭雅) as part of the Jiangnan Arsenal’s educational program for training modern engineers and technicians. The 25 figures on the two preliminary plates illustrate a range of drafting tools, including pens, compasses, rulers, scales, drawing boards, and related instruments used in geometric and engineering drawing.

The text is arranged into six concise chapters: on pens, compasses, rulers, paper, drawing boards, and general instructions. The work introduces the basic principles of measurement, proportion, and geometrical construction necessary for engineering, surveying, architecture, and cartographic drawing.
