This work is a late nineteenth-century compendium of treaties concluded between the Qing Empire and foreign powers. It begins with a treaty chronology by country, followed by sections on travel accounts, missionary activities, commerce, and miscellaneous treaty provisions (in three parts). The appendices include concise surveys of foreign nations, explanations of the circumstances leading to treaty negotiations, and an outline of the origins and transmission of Western religion. Together, the volume provides a valuable contemporary overview of Qing–foreign diplomatic relations, cross-cultural encounters, and the treaty system in late imperial China.
