This collection consists of 53 albumen prints, approximately 16 x 12 cm, with slight variations in size. Some photographs have annotations and markings. These original prints were taken by French General Albert D’Amade (1856-1941) during his tenure as France’s diplomatic representative in Tianjin. While traveling along the Yangtze River by ship, he captured the landscapes and local life of Chongqing and the southwestern reaches of the river during the late Qing Dynasty.
During the late Qing period, very few photographers ventured into the upper Yangtze River and southwestern China, making this collection a rare and invaluable visual record of the region's geography, landscapes, and cultural heritage. These images provide not only a significant historical reference on the Yangtze and southwestern China but also serve as an important early photographic documentation of the region.
