A monumental large-format bilingual photographic survey of the imperial and religious monuments of Jehol (Rehe/Chengde), issued in 1934 under the Manchukuo administration. The set comprises four imposing folio volumes (43.7 × 34.6 cm), Japanese-style bound in indigo hand-dyed cloth with gilt edges.
The four volumes contain photographic plates as follows:
Vol. 1: 63 plates;
Vol. 2: 85 plates (I, 84);
Vol. 3: 80 plates (II, 78);
Vol. 4: 76 plates (II, 74).
Altogether the set includes nearly 500 photographs (predominantly black-and-white, with a small number of colour and panoramic plates).
Each volume documents major architectural and religious sites of the former Qing imperial summer capital at Jehol, including the Imperial Mountain Resort (Bishu shanzhuang) and the surrounding Tibetan-Buddhist temples. Following the Japanese occupation of Jehol in 1933, a survey led by the architectural historian Sekino Tadashi and his assistant Takeshima Takuichi produced more than two thousand photographs of the imperial complex and its monuments; the present work selects the finest of these for publication.
Covers slightly faded. Library marks. Minor waterstaining to fore-edge of first two leaves in Vol. 3. Overall very good.
