An introductory work on algebra compiled by John Fryer for the Jiangnan Arsenal. The work explains the basic use of algebraic symbols and operations, including the classification of terms, combining like quantities, and the rules of powers and roots. The work was intended as a practical foundation for further study in geometry, trigonometry, and technical mathematics in the late Qing.

Some water staining throughout, minor cockling from damp.
