San Jiao Xu Zhi is an introductory work on trigonometry compiled by John Fryer (傅蘭雅) for the Jiangnan Arsenal’s scientific curriculum. The text introduces the basic principles of triangles, angles, and proportional relationships, and is arranged into five instructional chapters: general principles of trigonometry, the relations among the sides and angles of triangles, methods for solving right triangles, cases involving obtuse and acute angles, and methods for determining the height or distance of an object.
The work includes numerous in-text diagrams demonstrating geometric constructions and step-by-step applied problem solving
