One volume, Orig wrappers, small 8vo (19.5 × 13 cm), 10 leaves. 上海廣學會, Christian Literature Society Shanghai, 光緒二十年, 1894. Not recorded in WorldCat. Extremely scarce.
A rare 1894 Shanghai imprint on river engineering and commercial development, issued by the Shanghai Christian Literature Society. The volume contains three articles, each addressing hydraulic works and land-reclamation schemes relevant to Shanghai in the late Qing period.
The first article, jointly authored by Timothy Richard (李提摩太) and Cai Erkang, styled Zhutie’anzhu (蔡尔康/铸铁盦主), outlines a comprehensive proposal for water control and land reclamation around Shanghai (Zhishui pide ce bing tuiguang yu Shanghai yi shu 治水闢地策並推廣於上海議序).
The second article, titled Bilishi guo Anfa’ersi cheng Aisigu jiangzuo zhishui pide ce (比利時國安法爾斯城愛司谷江左治水闢地策), presents the hydraulic and land-reclamation works carried out at Belgium, offered as a model of modern engineering.
The third article, Ni tuiguang zhishui pide zhi fa yu Shanghai yi (擬推廣治水闢地之法於上海議), written by the Belgian Consul in Shanghai, proposes applying the same Belgian engineering methods to the waterways of Shanghai and the lower Yangtze region.
Together, these three texts illuminate a key moment in Sino-Western technical exchange, reflecting missionary reform thought, local expertise, and foreign diplomatic engagement with the modernization of Shanghai’s river systems.
