Translated by Cleveland Keith and rendered into Roman character by members of the same mission. The Matthew volume (Mo-tʻa dzæn fōk iung sū) is specifically recorded by Alexander Wylie (Memorials of Protestant Missionaries to the Chinese, 1867, p. 211).

Cleveland Keith (1827–1862) was an American Episcopal missionary active in Shanghai from the early 1850s. Working under Bishop Boone, he was engaged in the translation of Christian texts into the Shanghainese dialect. After returning to Shanghai in 1859, he took charge of a printing press established for the production of colloquial works in Roman characters, playing a key role in the development of early Romanized Shanghainese publications. The Shanghainese imprint “Van’ Kiön Sŭ Ök” found in the present works may plausibly be associated with this printing activity, possibly representing the local press through which such works were issued.

Later cloth.
