John Van Nest Talmage (1819–1892), known in Chinese as 打馬字. Talmage, who worked in Xiamen for more than four decades, was one of the most influential promoters of the Amoy vernacular and its Pe̍h-ōe-jī Romanization.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"501\" data-end=\"954\"\u003eWritten entirely in vernacular Romanized Amoy, the dictionary contains over 6,300 characters arranged alphabetically, with definitions and usage examples, together with radical indexes and supplementary corrections.
